FAQ
I don't have time for Yoga, but I'm really stressed, what can I do? Good question. Do you have 20 seconds? Although this is harder that it seems; if you can sit still for 20 seconds and breathe properly with your eyes relaxed, you will feel amazing. Proper breath is key; most of us breathe incorrectly. When you inhale the abdomen expands and when you exhale the abdomen falls. Try this, it may take some practice but it's worth the small effort to breathe correctly. "life is measured by the breath we take, not the physical years." 20 second challenge: *eyes completly still *spine straight *slow abdominal breathing. Do I have to be flexible and in shape? Not at all. Yoga builds flexibility and tones all types of bodies. Relaxing and focusing one's mind is one of the most difficult aspects of Yoga. With time, relaxation will become second nature. Feel free to talk with instructor about techniques you can do on your own that will help you relax. My doctor says yoga would be good for me but is it only for holistic people? Sometimes pictures in magazines show people in colorful hemp clothing doing yoga poses on big rocks near the seashore. I can promise you that in Georgetown we will not do yoga on big rocks near the seashore. True Yoga is for EVERYONE. Yoga has become trendy in the past few decades making people forget that it is more than 5000 years old. Yoga isn't anything new although new styles have been invented to appeal to the modern yogi. Why was I was able to do a posture one day but not the next? Just as outside influences affect our minds, so do outside influences affect our physical bodies. Challenging postures require an intense warm up, a good night's rest and focus. Let your body be the judge as to how far you take the Asana (posture) each day. I have neck pain and headaches after class. What causes this? This is usually caused by putting too much pressure on your neck while in Shoulderstand. Pressure should be on your shoulders, never on your neck. Always be aware of strain; roll out of the posture and relax if you feel discomfort that causes pain. Please consult a physician if the pain continues. Why can't I reach my toes? Many people are born flexible enough to touch their toes, but others must work up to it. After a few months of practicing Yoga, you will almost inevitably be able to touch your toes. Don't worry about this however - it is the forward bend that provides the benefit, not simply feeling your toes. Is Yoga a Religion? No. There is a devotional aspect to Yoga, but it is mostly a psychological discipline and is separate from the Yoga Asanas (postures) practiced in class. What can Yoga do for me? Yoga has many physical and mental benefits. It enhances concentration and flexibility. It heals and tones the body. Yoga will provide you with tools you can use to help you relax and focus, even when not in class. Why are there so many types of Yoga? In the West, many Yoga centers have added new twists to the traditional Hatha style to fit the modern lifestyle (desks). Some are fast paced and flowing such as ‘Power Yoga' and ‘Vinyasa Flow". Bikram Yoga' is a Hatha style that is practiced in an environment where temperatures can exceed 105 degrees (some people love this, me not so much). There is a style for everyone. I have an injury or disability. Can I still practice Yoga? Absolutely! Advise instructor of any injuries or disabilities before class. Postures can be modified or skipped from your practice. Can I do Yoga while pregnant? Yes. Check with your physician and advise instructor before beginning Yoga. Remember not to put pressure on your stomach and avoid certain breathing techniques. Ask instructor for all of the necessary modifications. If you're new to Yoga, it is best to start your practice after your baby is born. Your body is more flexible during pregnancy and you may not be aware of your limits. What is the third eye? The third eye is an energy point located between the eyes and about an inch into the skull. Through much yoga practice you will feel it. Use that location to focus your mind when it wanders. I cannot coordinate my breath and movement. Why is this? Breath control takes practice. If you feel light-headed or dizzy you may be going too fast. Take your time and begin to breathe first, then naturally flow into the posture (asana). Feel free to go at your own pace. Ask instructor for any advice on breathing techniques. I don't really like Yoga, but I know it's good for me. What should I do? Sometimes another day and a change in mood make all of the difference. If that doesn't help, try a different style or a different teacher. Yoga is for everyone. Don't give up. I want to learn more about Yoga. What should I read and do? There are many great books. Ask instructor for a book referral if you're interested in furthering your knowledge of Yoga. You will learn more from your own practice than from any books, so keep reading to a minimum. Swami Sivananda says, "An ounce of practice is worth more than a ton of theory." What type of Yoga do we practice in class? We practice Classical Hatha Yoga. Every class is suited to the needs of the students and all levels are welcome. |
